Throstle Park was created by Wigton Town Council in December 2021, with help from the Environment Fund of Cumbria County Council. Once a grazing field for sheep, it has since been transformed into a well-loved recreational space for the people of Wigton.
A 500-metre path was created around the site, ensuring accessibility in all weather conditions for walkers, prams and wheelchairs. In the wettest area of the field, a 30-metre wildlife pond was dug, helping to reduce the annual flooding that once affected the area.
In early 2022, volunteers from Wildlife for Wigton planted over 1,000 native trees along the border of the park. At the park’s highest point, a copper beech tree was planted to commemorate the Platinum Jubilee of HM Queen Elizabeth II, with another planted nearby in Phoenix Park.
As part of the Get Cumbria Buzzing campaign, local volunteers sowed wildflower seeds and planted wildflower plugs in spring 2022, helping to attract pollinators and enrich the park’s natural beauty.
The Wordsworth Trust in Grasmere also donated a willow structure, now located at the far end of the park. Positioned in a peaceful spot, it provides an ideal place for birdwatching along the Wiza Beck, which borders the park.
